Iona Stern

Iona’s semi-abstract paintings and prints have a base in landscape and figure. Her use of colour is free with gestural marks, capturing light, movement and mood.

Her work is an expressive response to place and memory. The resulting paintings are lively abstract landscapes and figures. Iona uses a variety of media and techniques in her work ranging from oils and collage to silkscreen.  Her colourful acrylic monotypes are painted directly through the back of a screen and display a luminous energy and vibrancy.

Her figurative work starts with life drawing and painting. She uses the figure as an abstract form, placed within the whole to form a design. She uses her figures combined with stencils, graphics and free mark making. With her joyful use of colour her works convey, life, energy and optimism.

Iona has a BA Hons in Art & Design from Canterbury College of Art and worked for over 30 years as an advertising art director and designer. For the last six years as an artist, she has worked as a painter and silkscreen printmaker.
